James Corden is fast becoming one of America’s favourite late night hosts, as anyone who has seen his hilarious carpool karaoke segments can attest to.
But Whovians knew him first as Craig Owens, the loveable (if somewhat lunkheaded) soul unwittingly pulled into the 11th Doctor’s adventures in The Lodger and Closing Time.
Since his last DW appearance in 2011, rumours have circulated about Corden reprising the role, and this week we finally got the exciting confirmation, that he will return!
But Corden won’t be back as Craig Owens…he’s playing himself, host of the Late Late Show, interviewing his special guest The Doctor!
The Late Late Show was the first to tweet the mind boggling news late last night….
Steven Moffat soon followed up with more details in an interview with BBCAmerica.
“We were intrigued by the massive online petition for Deadpool to appear in character as host of SNL, and being a well and true DW snob, I got to thinking…what sort of a host would the Doctor be? Then we got on the idea of having him show up on Graham Norton or a breakfast show, but one of my far more intelligent writers suggested we ask James. And then we all just went BRILLIANT!”
Peter Capaldi chimed in with some plot details during a Google Hangout… “It’s an episode set entirely in Hollywood, and he’s chasing an alien. Of course, being Hollywood, he can’t tell the difference between a L.A. celebrity and a legitimate alien, so he’s got to use the Sonic to unmask him. The only way to do that is to reach a wide audience. A couple of swipes with the Psychic paper and he is on James’ couch.”
But will The Doctor recognize his former flatmate? “I think we will have some fun with that” Moffat added in another interview with Horse and Hound magazine. “I mean, we’ve never seen James and Craig in the same place, have we?”
The episode, thought to be called Script Doctor, will air after the SuperBowl next year. Other rumoured guest stars include Alan Alda, Val Kilmer and David Beckham.
